Dr. Rich Staats started life as one of the eldest of forty first and second cousins in a traditional, mid-western, agricultural family. He joined the Army when he turned 18. Rich is extremely grateful to live in the USA and recognizes that it is one of the few places in the world where someone from his roots could do something other than live a life of abject poverty.
Brigadier General (BG) Staats, US Army Reserves, was commissioned through the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY where he was the top graduate in Math, Science, and Engineering for his class. BG Staats was fortunate enough to be selected as a Hertz Fellow for his graduate studies. He is a graduate of the US Army War College and the Command and General Staff College where he was the top graduate (Pershing Award winner). He is a highly decorated combat veteran including two field grade combat commands. His military awards include: the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Commendation Medal, and the Joint Service Commendation Medal. BG Staats was also awarded the Polish Medal of Distinction. Units he has commanded have received the Joint Unit Meritorious Citation and the Meritorious Unit Citation. BG Staats has served seven overseas tours including two combat commands in Iraq during OIF. He has been highly active in the interagency process including teaching part of the Provincial Reconstruction Team curriculum at the Foreign Service Institute from 2007-2008 and again in 2010. Since September 2014, BG Staats has been the Commanding General of the 316th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary).
In his civilian capacity, Dr. Staats serves as the Director for the Army Program Division at the MITRE Corporation where he advises senior executives in the Federal government. Distinctions include commendation from the Assistant Secretary of Defense, a Superior Honor Award from the US State Department, and twice the President's award for outstanding research. He has written numerous articles and contributed to five books on topics ranging from game design and artificial intelligence to the value of information. Dr. Staats is an internationally recognized speaker on organizational change and information theory. He was recognized by the European Engineering Society in 1996 as one of the 100 most cited information engineers world-wide. Rich has a Masters of Strategic Studies (MSS) from the US Army War College and a Ph.D. in Operations Research from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) where he graduated at the top of his cohort.
As a hobby, Rich conducts seminars on societal modeling and world design for authors and game designers.
BG Staats was blessed to be the single father of three: Kathy, Liz, and Rich Staats. Kathy is a medical doctor who practices emergency medicine in Austin, Texas, and Rich is a former Lance Corporeal in the US Marines and currently the CEO of the Cave, a video game company. Liz has a degree in hospitality management and is a chef in St. John's (US Virgin Islands).
